Ilarion Ionescu Galati

Ilarion Ionescu Galati He was born on the 17th of september 1937. He graduated the Music High School in Bucharest, and after The Academy of Music in 1959, having as professors George Manoliu, Vasile Filip, Constantin Bobescu, Emanuel Elenescu, George Breazul, Zeno Vancea. As a violonist he won the First Prize at "George Enescu" Competition in 1960; as a soloist, he played with all the orchestras of the country.

He was the first interpreter in Romania of the Concert no.1 for violin of Sostakovitch. He had tours in China, Mongolia, France, Spain, Russia.

He started to study conducting, first privatelly with Mircea Basarab and then between 1965-1968, at l'École Normale Superieure de Musique" in Paris, with Pierre Derveaux and Charles Munich, where he obtained the First Prize with the unanimity of the jury. In 1970 he participated at two series of courses of Eugene Ormandy, in Philadelphia, and Leopold Stokovschi, in New York.

From 1968 to 1999 he was permanent conductor of "Gheorghe Dima" Philharmonic of Brasov. Maestro Ilarion Ionescu-Galati was also permanent conductor of the Musical Theatre of Brasov (1980-1985), at the Symphonic Orchestra of Gavle-Sweden(1972-1982), at the Symphonic Orchestra of Winterthur-Switzerland (1980-1984) and at the Symphonic Orchestra of Istambul-Turkey. He collaborated also with a lot of important orchestras in Europe, Asia and USA, having under his baton all the great romanian soloists of the time and many others from the countries in which he performed.

Besides his interpreting activity, he also had a rich teaching activity in the contry and abroad , and he participated at severall musical festivals or in competitions jury.
